- Fig. 1 Instrument cluster: Collision warning
Applies to vehicles: with Audi adaptive cruise control
The braking guard uses radar sensors and a video camera. It remains active even when the adaptive cruise control is switched off.
What can the braking guard do?
Given sufficient time to react, it can assess a dangerous situation where a vehicle in front brakes suddenly or where you are driving fast and approach a much slower vehicle. The braking guard will not react if it is not in a position to detect the danger.
The system draws the driver's attention to various types of hazard:
- A distance warning is given if you are too close to the vehicle in front for more than just a moment. If the vehicle in front were to brake hard, a collision would no longer be avoidable. This is indicated by a warning lamp .
- A collision warning is given if the vehicle in front is much slower than you or if it brakes hard. If this warning is given, you may need to take evasive action or brake hard to avoid a collision. The warning lamp and instrument cluster display draw your attention to the danger Fig. 1. In addition, a tone will sound.
If you do not take appropriate action in time, the braking guard will assist by applying the brakes.
- In the event of an impending collision, an acute warning will be given initially in the form of a brake jolt.
- If you do not respond to the acute warning, the braking guard can, subject to general system limitations, apply the brakes with increasing brake force1), in order to slow the vehicle down and take the impact out of a potential collision.
- Just before a collision, it can initiate a full brake application1). A full brake application at higher speeds is initiated only on vehicles with adaptive cruise control and side assist (pre sense plus).
- If the braking guard detects that you are not braking hard enough in the event of an impending collision, it will increase the brake pressure.
- In the event of an impending collision, the pre sense functions are activated in addition ►Link.
Which functions can the driver control?
You can switch the braking guard and distance/collision warning on and off via the infotainment system ►Link.
WARNING!
The braking guard is a driver assist function and cannot prevent a collision on its own. The driver must always intervene personally. As the driver you are always responsible for braking in good time.
Note
- The automatic brake application with increasing brake force can be cancelled by applying the brakes yourself or by pressing the accelerator firmly or by taking evasive action.
- Please note that the braking guard can apply the brakes unexpectedly. Always secure your luggage to prevent damage and possible injury.
